What is Aquatic therapy?
Aquatic therapy is a skilled treatment technique used by our therapists to improve a child’s function in a natural and fun environment. It is an innovative approach that will motivate a child to meet their goals. We work with patients in one-on-one treatment sessions as a part of their treatment plan to supplement their land-based occupational or physical therapy.
What are the benefits from Aquatic Therapy?
Particular elements of the water enhance strength and skill development that cannot be achieved in land-based therapy. The hydrostatic pressure of the water increases the amount of proprioceptive input provided to the body which facilitates sensory integration. The viscosity of the water improves motor processing skills for increased gross and fine motor coordination. The buoyancy of water reduces risks associated with weight bearing exercises and can help to build muscle strength as well as increase endurance and flexibility. Aquatic therapy can also address auditory processing for direction following, task attention, primitive reflex integration, respiratory control, and can enhance relaxation for decreased anxiety.
