Serial Casting/Splinting

What is Serial Casting/Splinting?

Serial Casting/Splinting is the process of applying and removing casts or splints to the arm or the leg to provide a gentle stretch. It is a tool used to decrease the amount of tightness of the muscle and other tissues around a joint to increase in range of motion. The cast or splint is then removed and reapplied or adjusted weekly until the range of motion is achieved. Casts are worn 24 hours a day. Splints (Turtle Braces) can be worn during the day or during the night while the child sleeps. Depending on the child’s range of motion goals, the therapist will recommend whether casts or splints are needed.

What are the benefits of Serial Casting/Splinting?

Serial Casting/Splinting is a non-invasive way to improve range of motion which also can improve positioning and mobility of a body part, improve walking, and avoid surgical intervention.
